Our Home Project

Kings Manor
Marshes, Isle of Wight.

Kings Manor Marshes project is a landscape-scale nature initiative restoring and enhancing habitats across the Western Yar catchment.

Working with the Isle of Wight Council and our partners across the ecology and biodiversity sectors, our team leads this ambitious scheme, delivering biodiversity improvements at landscape scale with a particular focus on priority bird species.

It is also our home. Much of the complexity we advise our partners on, we have first had to work out here.

Why this matters

Kings Manor Farm sits within the Solent and Southampton Water Special Protection Area, the Yar Estuary SSSI and the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation.

These designations protect some of the most important salt marsh, reed bed and wading bird habitat in southern England, and they are under pressure from development, sea-level rise and centuries of drainage.

By transitioning agricultural land into a rich mosaic of marsh and fen, neutral grassland, mixed scrub, traditional orchards and native hedgerows, we are creating a long-term sanctuary for birds such as lapwing and curlew, and a foothold for a far wider range of species as the land becomes wetter and richer.

Natural Evolution

Intensively managed farmland, drained and cropped, with the estuary penned within its boundaries.

A wetter, richer landscape of marsh, fen and grassland, alive with lapwing, curlew and the species that follow them.
